The Collaborative Doctoral International Scholarships are made available by the University of East Anglia (UEA) and the British Library (BL) under theย AHRCโs Collaborative Doctoral Partnership Scheme.
The library of Robert Cotton (1571-1631), now a cornerstone of the BLโs globally-significant collections, has been defined as โthe most significant collection of manuscripts ever assembled in Britain by a private individual. This CDP offers a special chance to produce an original piece of research on the origins and/or seventeenth-century development of Cottonโs extraordinary collection.
This scholarship program will be overseen by Dr. Thomas Roebuck and Dr. Katherine Hunt, University of East Anglia, who are specialists in early contemporary scholarship and collecting practices; and Julian Harrison and Dr. Andrea Clarke, lead curators of Medieval and Early Modern Manuscripts at the BL.
The award holder will be based at the University of East Anglia, and will also be based at the BL for a substantial balance of the studentship.
At the university, you will join a profitable Medieval and Early Modern research community and have access to a host of training opportunities, and at the BL you will benefit from behind-the-scenes access, learning from other professionals across the Library, and anย extensive internal training offer.
You will also join the broader affiliate of CDP-funded students across the UK and will be qualified to participate in CDP Cohort Development Events. This studentship can be studied either full- or part-time.

The Collaborative Doctoral International Scholarships pay tuition fees up to the value of the full-time home UKRI rate for PhD degrees. Research Councils UK Indicative Fee Level for 2022/2023 is ยฃ4,596. The university has agreed to waive the fee difference for international students.
The Collaborative Doctoral International Scholarships pay full maintenance for all students, both home and international. The UKRI National Minimum Doctoral Stipend for 2022/2023 is ยฃ16,062, plus a CDP maintenance payment of ยฃ550/year, plus a London-partner allowance of ยฃ1000/year.
